Tropical Storm Lowell expected to become a major hurricane by Wednesday
Tropical Storm Lowell is forecast to intensify rapidly into a major hurricane by Wednesday and pass south of the Hawaiian Islands late this week or this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.
At about 11 a.m. today, Lowell was located about 740 miles southeast of Hilo.
Lowell was maintaining maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and moving west near 13 mph. Lowell is expected to move between west and west-northwest over the next few days.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center.
Lowell will generate swells that are likely to affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands around midweek.
Farther out in the Eastern Pacific, Karina remains a powerful Category 4 Hurricane.
At about 11 a.m. today, Karina was located about 1,095 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
Karina’s maximum sustained winds decreased to 130 mph with higher gusts and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph. Karina is forecast to continue in this general motion.
Forecasters said Karina will fluctuate in intensity through tonight then gradually weaken on Tuesday.
“The environmental conditions should remain favorable for the short term, and slight intensity fluctuations are possible while Karina’s inner core continues to experience structural changes,” according to the forecast. “Through the remaining forecast period, a weakening trend is expected to occur while Karina moves into a drier, more stable air mass and traverses cooler oceanic temperatures.”
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
