Trump approves emergency declaration for Hawaii
WASHINGTON — FEMA announced today that President Trump has approved federal disaster assistance for the state of Hawaii to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions that occurred when Hurricane Lala passed south of the Big Island from Aug. 14-16.
The president’s action authorizes FEMA to coordinate all federal disaster relief efforts to alleviate the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance to save lives, to protect property, public health and safety and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe.
This assistance is for Hawaii County, according to FEMA.
Gov. Josh Green on Saturday signed a formal request asking the White House to issue a presidential emergency declaration following Lala.
Lala brought approximately 20 to 40 inches of rain to some areas, triggering severe flooding, runoff and landslides. Initial reports indicate that hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed and that roads and bridges were damaged or washed out.
Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize and provide, at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75% federal funding.
