Two large earthquakes struck off Vanuatu in the South Pacific but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said today.
Two large earthquakes struck off Vanuatu but do not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii, officials said late this afternoon.
The magnitude 6.9 and 6.3 quakes struck over 100 miles northwest of Vanuatu in the South Pacific within about five minutes of each other just after 4:30 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquakes both had an estimated depth of about 6 miles below sea level.
“A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake. However, based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said in an alert sent after the larger of the two quakes. PTWC listed the initial magnitude of the larger quake as 7.2, but the USGS downgraded it to 6.9.
